This calculator does not check whether you qualify for FMLA or paid leave, and it does not know your state's rates - you type them in. It is an estimate, not tax or legal advice.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Quick answers on how the number is worked out and what it leaves out.

How is the number worked out?

For each stage of your leave, your weekly pay is multiplied by the percent, held to your weekly cap if you entered one, and reduced by your tax share. That weekly amount is multiplied by the weeks in the stage, and the stages are added up. Your usual pay is the same sum with 100% for every week of the leave.

Where do I find my state's numbers?

Look on your state's paid family leave website. You need three numbers: the weeks, the percent of your pay it replaces and the weekly cap. If your state has no program, leave the weeks in the State paid leave row at 0.

Does it work outside the US?

Yes, for the arithmetic. Type your own stages, percents and caps. The wording on this page is written for the US, so read the stage names as stand-ins for your own.

Can I add a partner's leave?

Not here - this calculator covers one person's leave. Baby & Leave Runway handles a partner on the same timeline.

Where do my numbers go?

Nowhere. Every calculation runs in your browser. Nothing you type is saved, uploaded or sent, and closing the tab clears it.
